This pattern may be very familiar to you if you grew up around trees. While many patterns are abstractions of real things, this “matsuba” pattern is very similar to the actual thing.

Colorful pine needles arranged in a tortoise shell pattern on a beige background.

Like many Japanese patterns, pine needles signify luck, as the firm connectedness of the needles even after falling conjures up feelings of marital bliss and married couples staying together.

With this meaning in mind, a kimono with pine needles will usually be worn by someone who is married or could be used as a gift between a married couple.
